The text was handed out during lectures on Cultural Heritage and Heritage Management at the Mediterranean University  (Universitá del Mediteranneo) in Rome. The history of architecture and city planning of the European civilization, from the Neolithic era to the mid-20th century, is presented  within the first part;  within the second part basic concepts on the idea of monuments and heritage preservation are being examined; the case study of the Holy Mountain (Mt Athos) in Greece is presented.
